Stepan's specialty surfactant line is used in a variety of markets including personal care, detergent, institutional, agricultural, lubricant, textile, coatings, adhesives and other niche markets. Its diverse ester product line is used in skin care creams, lotions, antiperspirants and sunscreens. These esters are also used as emulsifiers and flavor enhancers in the food industry. Customers include major multinational consumer product companies and small entrepreneurial companies.
Technologies
Stepan developed the continuous, falling film sulfonation process. This process yields high quality, low color surfactants in a variety of concentrations. Other technologies are emulsification, amidation, quaternization, alkoxylation and peroxidation. Stepan continually develops proprietary processing technology and application expertise to meet the changing needs of customer and global markets. Stepan's technology is consistently applied at all of its worldwide manufacturing facilities so that high quality, consistent products are available whenever they are produced.
 Major Products
Stepan's broad range of products includes a full line of anionic, cationic, nonionic, and amphoteric surfactants, as well as surfactant blends and specialty esters. In addition, Stepan will design custom surfactants and formulated blends to meet specific customer needs. Its polymer division manufactures phthalic anhydride, polyurethane polyls and foam systems for the polyurethane market. Stepan is a complete surfactant source with products that are the key ingredients to making consumer and industrial products work best.
Facilities
Stepan's products are manufactured at 11 plants throughout the world. Product shipments are available on a direct basis or through 150 distribution locations. All Stepan plants are ISO 9002 registered.

Stepan maintains technical service/applications laboratories in Northfield, IL headquarters; Mexico City, Mexico; Cali, Colombia; Manila, Phillipines; Longford Mills, Canada; Stalybridge, Cheshire, UK; Sao Paulo, Brazil and Voreppe, France.
